Resident Spotlight: George Kenneth Carlin
Ken was born George Kenneth Carlin in Bulwell, Nottingham on 5 March 1929 to his parents, Vic and Phyllis Carlin. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Victor. Known to everyone as Ken, he attended Highbury Vale Boys School. During his school years, Ken particularly enjoyed Maths, Geography, Woodwork and Metalwork, subjects that would later complement his engineering career.
Ken spent his childhood during the years of the Second World War, a period that undoubtedly left its mark on the nation. As he grew older, his interest in travel and adventure would eventually lead him to join the Royal Navy and see the world for himself.
Like many young boys of his generation, Ken loved being active and was often seen out creating many happy memories in the great outdoors. He enjoyed playing football and cricket and was also a keen dancer. He enjoyed spending precious time playing with his beloved childhood dog, Toby, who was a constant companion during his younger years.
After leaving school, Ken embarked on what he describes as one of the greatest achievements of his life – joining the Navy. His naval career took him sailing across the globe, allowing him to experience different countries, cultures and adventures. Following his time at sea, Ken worked in a variety of engineering roles, building a successful career through his skills and dedication derived from his childhood and his employment in the Navy.
Around this time, Ken met the love of his life, Sadie. They met whilst dancing away at the local dance hall, where it was quite simply, love at first sight. Their romance blossomed and they later married at St Mary’s Church in Bulwell, surrounded by loved ones. Over the coming years, Ken and Sadie went on to build a beautiful family.
Together, they welcomed two sons, Christopher and Peter. As the years passed, Ken and his wife were delighted to see their family grow, eventually becoming proud grandparents to seven grandchildren and great-grandparents to five great-grandchildren.
Ken and Sadie enjoyed a vibrant, active life together where they fondly shared many interests and created lasting memories. Ken was proudly involved with the Scouts, the Horological Society and the American Square Dance Club. His hobbies also included cycling, football, dancing and walking, which helped him keep fit and stay sociable.
In line with his ventures around the globe with the Navy, Ken and Sadie shared a passion for travel, exploring destinations across the UK and abroad. Their adventures took them across the globe from sunny Spain and the Canary Islands to the stunning sights of Canada, creating memories that Ken still treasures today.
Since becoming a resident at Newgate Lodge Care Home in November 2024, Ken has become a valued and much-loved member of the home and enjoys taking part in a wide range of activities. From expressing his creativity through painting to stepping back in time and enjoying a dance to some of his favourite tunes, Ken is always happy to get involved.
He still has a particular love for the outdoors and can often be found relaxing in the garden, enjoying the fresh air and peaceful surroundings. Above all, Ken continues to cherish spending precious time with his family, creating new memories and reminiscing fondly on the many happy moments throughout his life.
Reflecting on a life filled with adventure and memorable experiences, Ken says that his greatest achievement was joining the Navy and having the opportunity to sail around the world. His happiest memories are those devoted to his family. These include marrying his cherished wife, Sadie, raising his children, Christopher and Peter, and spending precious time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ken is proud to have seen his family grow over the years. These treasured moments remain close to his heart and serve as a reminder of a life well lived.
