A former Commonwealth Games swimmer who spent decades teaching generations of Mansfield children to swim has returned to the pool after Newgate Lodge Care Home helped make one of her long-held wishes come true.

Maureen Arnold, a resident at Newgate Lodge Care Home in Mansfield, recently took part in a private swimming session at the Rebecca Adlington Leisure Centre, supported by her family, care team and local community partners.

For Maureen, who competed internationally as Maureen Pitchfork, returning to the water was a deeply meaningful moment. She represented England at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, competing in the women’s 110-yard backstroke and 330 yard medley relay.

Lee Swinn, Home Manager at Newgate Lodge Care Home, said: “Swimming has been such an important part of Maureen’s life, so helping her return to the pool was incredibly special for everyone involved.”

“This was about more than an activity — it was about reconnecting Maureen with something she has loved for so many years. Thanks to the support of Maureen’s family, our care and activities teams, and local community partners, we were able to make this wonderful moment possible.”

Maureen went on to become a prominent figure in Mansfield’s sporting community. Alongside her husband, she transformed a former Methodist church in Mansfield Woodhouse into the Kingfisher School of Swimming in 1973.

Amongst the many swimmers she coached was Mansfield’s Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, who trained with Maureen during the early stages of her swimming journey.

Maureen was also a talented discus thrower and represented Great Britain in athletics in 1962. In 2014, she received The Mayor of Mansfield’s Special Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to swimming.

Lee added: “Moments like this show the importance of truly knowing our residents — their stories, passions and achievements. We are very proud to have supported Maureen in returning to the pool.”
