Get To Know Lee, Deputy Manager at Newgate Lodge Care Home
In October 2016 Lee started as Deputy Manager at Newgate Lodge. As an important member of the team for nearly 5 years, we asked him a few questions to share an insight into part of the residential home management team.
A Usual Day in Lee’s Role
Lee’s day starts between 5am and 6am so he can oversee the night shift team. Lee said he feels it is important to be there for the night team because working nights can feel isolating without the proper support. It is also important to have communication between night staff and day staff to ensure smooth running of the home and continuity of care for residents from day to night. The level of care is key to the success of the home and its relationship with the local community.
What is Your Favourite Part of Your Job?
Although it is hard to pinpoint just one thing about his job that Lee favours, one of his favourite parts of the job is being part of a team striving to make each resident’s stay pleasurable and making family members feel at ease knowing that their loved ones are being looked after is. It is also important for the whole team to promote a choice led environment with qualified staff and management, values which Lee feels is important.
What Advice Would You Give to Someone Looking to Put Their Loved One in Care?
Lee strongly suggests visiting the home to get a feel for the care environment and believes in following your instinct, if it feels right when you walk into the care home and the staff are welcoming then it is probably the best place for your loved one. Newgate Lodge welcomes tours without the need to book, for your convenience and to give peace of mind that you are getting a 100% authentic experience.
What Advice Would You Give to Someone Aspiring to Work in Care Home Management?
Though working in care is rewarding, Lee says that his role entails long hours, completing training and learning courses and covering shifts at short notice so he advises that individual commitment is key to succeeding in management for any care setting.
What Do You Usually Do Outside of Work?
In Lee’s free time he enjoys going on holiday in the UK and abroad, currently he enjoys weekends away at Tattershall Lakes. Prior to travel restrictions some of Lee’s favourite holidays include Canary Islands, Ibiza, Ayia Napa, Cornwall, Devon and he also lived and worked in Cyprus. Lee also enjoys going to watch local sports and supports Mansfield Town Football Club.
